Backcasting is the process of running a forecast rule in reverse to arrive at the assumption when the answer is known.

Backcasting is the opposite of forecasting, where assumptions are always entered and results are calculated.

Because aggregate data is often considered static data, Backcasting acts as a critical step for evaluating and running alternative scenarios at any level within the business other than the lowest level.
